In addition to Anglo American's sustainability endeavours, which are integral to our business activities, we aim to contribute an average of 1% of pre-tax profit in the form of social investments.
Where and how we invest this money depends on several factors – including the scale of our operations, and local needs and aspirations. The Anglo American Chairman's Fund in South Africa has provided a template for giving elsewhere. It is regularly given top rating by its peers amongst social investment vehicles and NGOs.
The new Anglo American Group Foundation, established in the UK by Anglo American plc, is now one of our main conduits for social investment. In 2006, it supported, among other good causes, an educational scholarships programme initiated by NGOs and charities including CARE, SightSavers International, Engineers without Borders, Children of the Andes, Bees for Development, the HIV and AIDS charity Starfish, Kew Gardens' Millennium Seedbank and the UK homelessness charities Centrepoint and the Connection at St. Martins in the Fields in London.
