Anglo American was one of the earliest members of the Global Business Coalition (GBC) on HIV/AIDS, joining in June 2004. We subscribe to the GBC's ten Principles which cover the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; ensuring that businesses are not complicit in human rights abuses; upholding freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; eliminating forced labour; supporting the abolition of child labour; eliminating discrimination in the workplace; observing the precautionary principles to environmental challenges; undertaking initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; encouraging the diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies; and combatting corruption. Anglo American's performance against the Principles is detailed in the Anglo American 'Report to Society'.
Anglo Coal, represented by Tony Redman, received one of the first GBC business excellence awards. Tony Trahar was one of the first members of the GBC Corporate Advisory Board and was followed by Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, who is the current Chairman of GBC. In 2004, Anglo American was recognised with another GBC award for outstanding leadership in the business response to HIV/AIDS.
Anglo American South Africa hosts the African regional GBC office at 45 Main Street, Johannesburg.
